this reminds me of the one time i mentioned that philanthropy work is sometimes counterproductive and i used the example of toms and like half the class was wearing toms and they all literally kind of just looked down at their shoes and back at me and i feel like they thought i was criticising them and it got worse because my anarchist APUSH teacher agreed

sorry to inform you that this isn’t a taylor swift song & your social success in high school does not correlate with success in life in the future, do not think that just because you were reading books at home instead of partying that you are somehow miraculously a better person & a prime candidate for future success because that is a very bad mindset to have
your future success depends on you & your motivation & dedication towards what you are trying to achieve it does not matter if you never went out of your house or if you partied every night of the week in high school why is this such an accepted concept i don’t understand

Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of non-combustible data, chock them so damned full of ‘facts’ they feel stuffed, but absolutely ‘brilliant’ with information. Then they’ll feel they’re thinking, they’ll get a sense of motion without moving. And they’ll be happy, because facts of that sort don’t change. Don’t give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy.
